The Chef Ann Foundation & Workforce Development: Nourishing the Future from the Ground Up

What began as a vision to transform school food in Boulder, Colorado, has grown into a nationwide movement. The Chef Ann Foundation has impacted over 4.4 million children in all 50 states and supported more than 16,000 schools in implementing healthier, scratch-cooked meal programs.

From Cafeterias to Communities: Chef Ann’s Model

For too long, ultra-processed foods have been the norm in school cafeterias — especially in under-resourced districts. The Chef Ann Foundation is flipping the script. By providing hands-on training, programs, tools, and funding opportunities, they help school food professionals cook from scratch, source locally, and build skills that last a lifetime.

Their programs go beyond food; by linking school food programs with professional development, they’re not only feeding kids — they’re building careers. These programs provide culinary training to aspiring and current school food professionals, bringing job creation and community engagement full circle.

In California alone, the Chef Ann Foundation operates in 75 K-12 districts, reaching nearly 494,602 children. In February 2025, the foundation announced 27 school food leaders selected for the national 2025 Healthy School Food Pathway Fellowship, a 13‑month leadership development program. But the scope is broader: this fellowship is part of a nationwide strategy to empower food leaders who can drive systemic change in their regions.
