"I think I have Some Life Insurance At Work...?"

This is how many of our conversations with our customers begin.  They vaguely remember that they have some kind of life insurance through work, but they don't know what it is or how much.  If that's you, you're not alone.

The life insurance you have at work is called Group Life insurance.  It is generally included as part of your benefits package and is valid as long as you work at your company. It is often one or two times your salary which is a good start, but may not be adequate protection.

How much coverage should you have?  A recommended guideline is 10 to 15 times your income.  That might sound like a lot until you think about what you want to protect.  Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

• Do you have debts or loans that someone else could be responsible for if something happened to you?
• Are you planning on getting married or thinking about having a baby in the next few years? Getting life insurance before some of life’s big events may ensure that financial assets, liabilities and responsibilities are covered and not a burden.
• Are you in relatively good health today?  Being young and healthy is a good time to buy life insurance as it gets more expensive as you age, and if a health issue develops in the future, you may not be able to get life insurance at all.
